Obituary for Lorraine Smith

Lorraine Smith (nee Meade), age 79, of Fenelon Falls, Ontario, passed away peacefully on the evening of September 15, 2022 at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, with her eldest son Jeff at her side. This followed a short battle with gallbladder cancer, diagnosed in June. Lorraine was born on October 19, 1942 at home in Port-Aux-Basques, Newfoundland, moved to Toronto in 1953, and had lived in the vicinity ever since.

Pre-deceased by parents Victor and Sabina, and husband Ross, she is survived by her sisters Sylvia (Peter) and Wendy (Douwe), brother Gerald (Beth), children Jeff (Fleur), Stephen (Kim) and Lisa (Graham), grandchildren Matthew, Brinna, Dew, Rigel, Aidan, Frog, Liam and Kyle, her first great-grandchild Sloane, and many nieces and nephews.

Lorraine is remembered as a loving wife of 57 years to Ross, whom she lost in December 2020, and as Beautiful Gramma to her eight adoring grandchildren. She loved Scrabble and crosswords, reading, shopping, playing her clarinet, singing in the church choir, and engaging in the lives of her children and their busy families. She could often be found with a glass of wine in her hand and was never without some kind of candy in her purse when the little ones were around. After a brief separation, we like to think that Lorraine and her clarinet have now been reunited with Ross and his saxophone, and that they're playing together in a band once more, as they had been doing since they first met in high school.

We are grateful that Lorraine remained well enough for family and friends to visit over the summer, and we thank everyone for their visits, calls, cards, emails and gifts. There will be a celebration of life at JARDINE FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION & TRIBUTE CENTRE, 8 Princes' St. W., Fenelon Falls on Tuesday, September 20th, with a period of visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m. until the time of celebration at 12:30 p.m., and a reception to follow. The ceremony will be livestreamed for those who are not able to attend; http://peacefulmoments.ca/lorraine-smith/

The family would like to thank the staffs at Ross Memorial Hospital and Community Care of the City of Kawartha Lakes for all their support over the past few months. If desired memorial donations can be made in Lorraine’s memory to the Canadian Cancer Society, the Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation, or the Anglican Church of Canada’s Primate's World Relief and Development Fund [www.pwrdf.org] To leave an on-line condolence, make a memorial donation or to share a story or photo with the family please visit: www.jardinefuneralhome.com
