Obituary for Alice Irene Smith (Fairbarn)

Smith, Alice Irene

On Friday, November 15, 2019 at Niagara General Hospital in her 92nd year. Beloved wife of the late Newman F. Smith (1999). Loved dearly by her son and fishing buddy, Leslie G. Smith and his wife Kay of Stevensville, Ontario. Dear grandmother of Stephanie, Jessie, Brian and his wife Ashlyn, Gary, Fantasia and her husband Shane, Esporonza and her husband Eric, and Gage. Great-grandmother of many loving grandchildren. Alice will be fondly remembered by her sister, Jean Robson of Blasdale, New York and half-sister Eleanor Lewis of St. Catherines. Sister-in-law of Grace Roper of Niagara Falls. Dear aunt to many nieces and nephews.
Alice was born on January 9, 1928 in North Gwillimbury, near Sutton, Ontario, to her parents George and Ada Fairbarn. She was one of 5 children; brothers Milton, Max, Kenneth and sister, Aileen. Alice moved to the Niagara area in 1940 and was employed by the Niagara Wire Weaving Company where she met her fishing pal and love, Newman Smith. When Newman returned from the war they started spending their holidays in Fenelon Falls beginning in 1952 and decided that they loved the area so much that they built their cottage on Sackitt Road in 1967 and eventually retired permanently in 1982. Much time was spent fishing, enjoying Bingo at the local Legion and returning to the Niagara area to visit with friends.
Private family arrangements were held at JARDINE FUNERAL HOME, CREMATION & TRIBUTE CENTRE, 8 Princes' St. W., Fenelon Falls. Interment Lundy's Lane Cemetery in Niagara Falls. If desired memorial donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice would be appreciated.
