Memories of A Great Life Friend

I first met Les when my dad hired him to drive me to grade school at De La Salle Oaklands in Toronto. Every day after he drove me home, we used to play catch in our front yard for half an hour and we would  pretend we were certain players of the Toronto Maple Leafs Baseball team of the International League which had some great players who went on to play in the American and National Leagues. Les drove me to and from school for many years and we really became close "friends," sharing many hockey and baseball stories.

Once I made a minor league kids team which played many of their games on Toronto outdoor rinks, Les took me to all those games and stood and watched every one. One night at Rosedale Rink, I can remember it was cold as heck and it was snowing fairly hard outside but there was Les, standing along the boards with collar up and watching the whole game in that weather rather than sit in a warm car. That was Les. He was always interested in my hockey and would want to be close to the action.

My dad had 4 season tickets to the Maple Leaf home games at Maple Leaf Gardens and Les and Shirley used to pick me and my friend up every Wednesday and Saturday to go to those games and every night on the way home,we would always talk about the game and who played well and certain big plays. Les and Shirley did this for a few years but once I became 16, I started to drive and then began dating and taking a girlfriend to the games and thus ended all the trips to games with Les and Shirley. We all had a great time at and on the way home from those games for sure. I kept in touch with Les from time to time, phoning him at his home in Fenelon Falls and having many a great chat about the Leafs and the N.H.L.

Les was a great guy and would do anything for you, as mnany of his friends will attest to. A great man, fine father and life time friend, he will be sorely missed. God bless you and rest in peace my friend and kindest sympathies to Shirley and family.
