Uncle Les

Uncle Les and Aunt Shirley were great friends to my Mom, Shirley's sister Marjorie and my step dad Harry. Les and Shirley visited frequently on the weekend and we would all be glued to Hockey Night in Canada with Foster Hewitt on Saturday nights. I was a hugh Leaf fan as a young boy and Johnny Bower was my hero. One Saturday night while visiting Uncle Les in Toronto, Les asked me to accompany him on a drive downtown. I protested a bit, worried that we might miss the start of a Leafs vs Detroit playoff game. I can't remember the year exactly but it was in the early sixties and I would have been 11 or 12. Anyway we parked the car and began to walk. I had no idea were we were. Next thing I know we walk into a big building with pictures of my heroes on the wall. Yes, I was at the shirine, Maple Leaf Gardens. I will never forget the thrill. I even remember Stemkouski breaking Bower's stick in the warm up. The Leafs won by the way. It was one of the highlights of my youth. Thanks to Uncle Les for providing me with that memory. Stew Elkins
