Obituary for Ben Jowitt

JOWITT, Ben:

It is with great sadness that the family of Ben Jowitt announce his passing on November 30, 2022 with his family by his side at Ross Memorial Hospital at the age of 89.

Ben was born on March 26, 1933 in Leeds, Yorkshire, England, and passed away in Lindsay, Ontario. He is survived by his wife and best friend, Jinty (nee Steele), of 54 years. He is predeceased by his parents Frank and Gladys Jowitt of Thunder Bay, formerly of Leeds. Predeceased by his brother Ron (Joan) and survived by his sister Joan (Adriano, predeceased) of Meduna Di Livenza, Italy. Loving father of Lyn, Carol, and Grant (Jess) and grandfather of Kate, Andrew, Caleb and MacKenzie.

He came to Canada in 1953. He undertook a lifelong education in business and finance and spent the majority of his career at McKellar General Hospital in Fort William (now Thunder Bay, Ontario) and then at Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay, Ontario as the Director of Finance from 1967 until 1988. He was tireless in his contributions to his community through countless organizations and boards, with special connections to Rotary (double Paul Harris Award recipient), Masons –Spry Lodge # 406, Jaycees (Junior Chamber of Commerce International) and Senate, Probus, Canadian Club, and Fenelon Falls United Church and choir. Ben also volunteered his time as a Councillor in Fenelon Falls and with various Village subcommittees, the Canadian Cancer Society, Five Counties Children’s Centre, and as a youth baseball coach.

Ben was a devoted family man, a curler and cricketeer in his younger days, described as determined (perhaps even a little bit stubborn – actually a lot), a fan of golfing around the world, enjoyed travelling with his wife in their retirement and taking many photographs, a collector of valuable (and not so valuable) items, an avid bridge fan, and was known to ask lots of questions but also accomplished a lot because of this trait.

Ben will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. The family would like to thank the medical staff in the Palliative Care Unit of Ross Memorial Hospital for their excellent care of Ben during his time there. A Celebration of  Ben's life will take place on Saturday, December 10th at 1:30 pm at Fenelon Falls United Church, 123 Colborne Street, Fenelon Falls with a reception to follow from 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm. The interment will happen at a later date for the family.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Ross Memorial Hospital Foundation or your charity of choice. To leave an on-line condolence, make a donation or to share a photo or story please visit: www.jardinefuneralhome.com
