Obituary for Douglas Henry York

Parks Canada - Trent Severn Waterway-Maintenance

With the love of his family surrounding him and after a short but courageous battle with cancer, Doug embarked on his final journey. He went peacefully on Sunday, January 23, 2022 at the Ross Memorial Hospital in Lindsay. Doug York of Fenelon Falls was in his 68th year. Beloved husband and best friend of Kimberley (nee Randall-Steele). Loving father of Cameron York (Marcena) of Yellowknife, Doug York of Edmonton, Stuart York (Veronica) also of Yellowknife, and step-father of Greg Pelleterio also of Edmonton, Larissa Pelleterio of Vancouver Island, Luke Steele (Christy) of Alliston, Shannon Steele (Andrew) of Trent Lakes and Max Steele of Fenelon Falls. Dear grandfather of Kelton, Lochlin, Kenzie, Hannah, Hazel, Logan, Kenny and Margo. Doug was one of five children and the second son of a Steeplejack. Pre-deceased by his parents Lou and Mary York and will be forever loved and remembered by his siblings; Judy Humphrey (Dave, pre-deceased), of Belleville, Larry York of Burnt River, Marylou Grummitt (Frank) of Muskoka, Dave York of Trent Lakes and will never be forgotten by his many nieces and nephews.

Doug started his journey working at Nephton Mines as a sheet metal worker in the 1970's. After studying at Sir Sandford Fleming College in Peterborough, he obtained his welding certificates. He moved his young family west to Alberta and got his "B" Pressure Welding Certificate. He worked in B.C. helping his brothers sandblast and paint bridges. In the 1980's he migrated north to Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, and started his own business. He worked across the north in Canada's Arctic continuing his work in steel erection and welding. In the new millenium, Doug returned to his hometown in Ontario. During 2007 and 2008 Doug travelled to Northern Russia (across 10 timezones) to oversee the erection of a hospital, a daycare and a school. Later he returned to Sir Sandford Fleming College in Peterborough as a welding instructor.  In 2015 Doug continued his career journey with the Trent Severn Waterway starting with handrail welding duties and later progressing to maintenance. He worked with them until the end of his life's journey.

Family was important to Doug, his grandchildren and family were at the top of his list. Doug loved being outdoors whether it was his workplace or at home. He was an avid gardener. He enjoyed building; from chicken coops to covered bridges. He took great pride in fabricating "stuff" - from his blue gyroscope giving rides to children and adults at the Yellowknife Winter Carnival to entering and winning the ugliest truck contest.  Kim and Doug enjoyed travelling to Oshkosh, Wisconsin, to attend the 'Air Venture Fly-In'. They also loved going to Cuba for their vacations. Doug was known to lend a helping hand to those who needed it. So whether he was called "Doug", "Sweetie", "Hey Brother", "Uncle",  "Grampa" or "Gug", he will always be known as an artist who left his marque on many projects, and as a man who was WITTY, HONEST, COMPASSIONATE, LOYAL, SYMPATHETIC and one of the best brothers, father, grampa, husband and friend ever.
