Obituary for Gary Frederick Evans

Gary Frederick Evans, age 85, passed away, peacefully, December 19, 2022. He was born on May 26, 1937, in Toronto, ON and was predeceased by his parents, Fredrick and Gwendolyn (Mathieson) Evans. He is survived by his sisters, Daryl Evans, Beverley (Glen) Norton and brother, Ralph with wife Helen Evans including several nieces, and nephews.

Gary was known by many names,  “the Beer Man” “the Train Man”, “the Bike Man” but to his family, he was just “Uncle Gary”.

Gary is someone who always loved the outdoors, spending many hours watching the freight trains shunting between the rails beside our house. For most of his life, Gary would hop on his bike daily and head out in search of beer bottles that he would trade in for spending money. He must have logged thousands of kilometres over the years searching all the parks and ditches in the City of Guelph. The family received many phone calls from residents, over the years, who would report having seen Gary in the far corners of the city. Always the child at heart, Gary was not someone to be trifled with. Gary would go up to many a stranger, poke his finger in their chest, and say “I’m better than you, you know.” Humorous to a fault and entirely harmless, Gary was a well-liked individual who deeply cared for his family.

Gary spent the last several years in Fergus at Caressant Care Nursing Home and kept both the residents and support workers on their toes. A very special thank you to Gary’s niece, Ellen Kurtz, who loved him unconditionally, and devoted much time to keeping him smiling. She was his living guardian angel.

Gary will be laid to rest with his parents in Fenelon Falls in the spring, 2023.
