Obituary for Janet Blair Scully (Anderson)

Jan passed away suddenly at her home in Trent Lakes on Friday, March 11 at the youthful age of 74. Jan was born and raised in Orillia from loving parents who shared with her values that made her such a loving, gifted, vibrant and caring person on this our “Pale Blue Planet.” She was forever making people happy, valued and special to her and everyone around her. Her smile said it all. Jan “loved life” and her love for it spread far and wide and to everyone she encountered over her life. Jan’s love for life and learning was evident in her enjoyable years as an educator. She taught children and adults in elementary school, secondary schools and in teacher education programs at university. Her dedication to students’ emotional and academic needs garnered her countless accolades from them as she helped them achieve excellence and provide them direction and confidence to become successful in life. Her many letters from students, staff and administration shows she was making a huge difference for people and everyone was appreciative for her efforts. Her many awards for Teaching Excellence in Ontario supported her dedication to the young people she encountered throughout her career in teaching. She shared her love of youth and learning in Niagara Falls, Brampton, Orillia, Uptergrove, Barrie, Markham, Peterborough and Toronto. Her experience at Faculties of Education - OISE, York, and Trent spread her love of learning to many upcoming teachers who in-turn spread her excellence to countless learners throughout the province. Jan was also an editor and author of several mathematics learning materials for students engaged in mathematics. Her hands-on approach to teaching students was evident in her writing in particular in the Alge Tiles resource which helped students understand all the processes in learning algebra through the hands-on use of coloured tiles. Her work as a classroom teacher, consultant for the YRDSB, and speaker at numerous mathematics conferences across Canada and the United States was rewarding to her and mostly to the wonderful people she met along her career. Her family are so proud of her accomplishments in education and in living. Humble to the core doing what was right for learners as she quietly went about “making a difference.” Jan is the loving daughter of Andy and Katherine Anderson and sister of Elizabeth Glynn, deceased. Her husband, Barry and daughters Tracey Fricker (John) and Allison (Mitch, Charlie) and wonderful grandchildren Tyler and Alexa will miss Jan/ Gaga immensely and each will carry the fondest of love and memories of her forever. She leaves behind her sister Kay-Anne Broger(Eric) of Orillia, uncle Frank King, nephews Kevin Broger, Simon Glynn as well as nieces Andrea Broger, Liise Broger, Rebecca Skelton (Frank) and Bronwen Glynn. Best friends Bev Wilson (Chuck) and Ev Armstrong (Bill) who are as much family as they are friends. She is missed by her cousins Robert and Anita Curry, Diane and John Scarlett, Ron and Richard Blair, Karen and Elsworth LeDrew. A celebration of Jan’s life will take place on Tuesday, March 15th at 1:30pm at Jardine’s Funeral Home, Cremation & Tribute Centre, 8 Princes’St., West in Fenelon Falls. Masks are required. The family would appreciate donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation and condolences can be made through Jardine’s Funeral Home or online at www.jardinefuneralhome.com Jan will be interred in the spring at Saint Andrew’s - Saint James Cemetery in Orillia.
