Obituary for Madeleine Day Gaul (Thirkill)

GAUL, Madeleine:

It is with great sorrow to announce the peaceful passing of Madeleine Day Gaul (Thirkill) after a long illness with her loved ones by her side. Her family would like to express their deep gratitude to the wonderful staff at Fenelon Court and her amazing caregivers Trish Bennett, Marlene Jenkins and Janet Tysiak for going above and beyond to give her the last lovely years of life that she deserved. Beloved by so many, Maddie’s wisdom and intellect transcended generations. Those who knew Maddie admired her insight, intellect and wisdom, which was presented in such a way as to be personal and non-judgemental. She truly listened and gave solid advice. A wonderful cook, you could find her meandering through her beautiful gardens or enjoying a lakeside chat. Maddie arrived in Canada in the 60’s with a one-way ticket and plenty of ambition. She touched the lives of millions of Canadians through her groundbreaking work with William M. Mercer. During her illustrious career Maddie broke glass ceilings as one of the first females in her profession, pioneering flexible benefits, pension creation and high-stake mediation. Maddie is survived by her children, Alison and Philip Gaul, her beautiful granddaughters Avery and Alicia and her son-in-law Adam Smith. She is fondly remembered by her partner Hugh Johnstone and her loving sister and brother-in-law in England, Judy and Michael Marlow, along with her nephew Alex (Lisa) and niece Emma (Ben). She is predeceased by her loving husband Kevin Gaul, her mother Molly Thirkill (Chitty) and fondly remembered by her close friend  Barbara Jones and her extended Aussie family. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Women’s College Hospital. A celebration of life will be held at a later date when those who loved her will be found with a cold glass of Lindemans chardonnay in hand celebrating her memory with a spin around the dance floor.
