Bart was the only child of Horace and Nancy (Barton) Thomas, born in Barrow-in-Furness, England. His Father was an accountant and passed away when Bart was only 5, due to his severe asthma. Approximately five years later his Mother remarried Robert Helm who became a solid Father Figure to him. At 14 years of age the family sailed to Canada settling in St. Catharines. It was in Ontario where he finished all his education and became a math and science teacher in middle school. He married Doreen Nelson from Kirkland Lake, Ontario. They had two girls together; Valerie and Catharine. Most of their family life they lived in Crystal Beach, Ontario. He stopped being a teacher when his children were very young and is most known for owning Crystal Taxi. He also owned small businesses in the area such as a couple of laundromats and a pool hall. Doreen passed away in 2008 but he is survived by his two daughters and 5 grandchildren; Raymond (25), Sheila (21), Emily (19), Nicole (16) and Rachel (6). For most of his adult life he suffered from diabetes and its complications. The last decade of his life he enjoyed extensive traveling and was fortunate to have spent significant time in China and Thailand against his family's advice due to health concerns. Now looking back we are glad that he lived life to the fullest and persevered in never giving up on his goals. Carpe diem or "seize the day"
