When asked recently for a word association of my dearly departed Uncle Murray the name El Camino immediately popped into my mind. He embodied the very essence of that car by living his life as "all business up front...party in the back..." much like his favourite Chevy. My father and his Dad were both "sedan" types of fellows whilst Murray was the "coupe" kind of guy. He was a mix of James Dean (cool), Elvis Presley (hair), and Darrell Waltrip (humour) while maintaining an Earnhardt type of respectability. He always had a cold beer and a heart warming story ready for all visitors and never turned off the open sign. This was likely why "Goldie" took well over 40 years to finally come to life, allowing Murray limited time to fully enjoy his creation towards the end. I was recently informed that he was left-handed (who knew?) which would explain his fondness for circle track racing (all left turns). I can't remember how many Daytona 500's I fell asleep beside him "watching" the race on TV (luckily Liz always knew who won!!). We will always miss Murray the same way Dale Jr. wishes his Dad was still alive...neither one will ever fade from our memories. The translation of El Camino is apparently "the way" and it's namesake freeway is referred to as the "Royal Road" or the "King's Highway". Here's hoping that both Murray & Liz are travelling comfortably together down this road during their journey in Goldie towards their final pit-stop. Rest in peace folks!! With all my love...your nephew Brian. P.S. Maggie still barks at everyone but Barb and says hello!!
