Condolence: Carolyn ~ Here's a blast from the past! I was so sorry to read about Don's passing. I was in Don's class at Teacher's College back in 54/55. You were in the class ahead of us (alphabetical as they were). I taught for 4 years before having a family and then became a homemaker. Your teaching careers were so interesting! I have noticed your presence on TV with both your parents' funerals and extend my belated sympathies thereto. If you wish to re-connect I'd be happy to respond.

Sincerely, Ina Scholfield (nee Rautian)

Condolence: To all of Don's family I send my heartfelt condolences. I hope remembering the special times you all spent together will help you to accept his passing. I just want you to know that Don touched many lives including mine in his role of Gr.8 teacher at Bridlewood P.S. My memories will include him teaching about the House of Commons and Senate with huge drawings all over the chalk board He brought it to life with his many lessons and he taught us until we understood. He allowed children to be children and when he talked to us he looked at us and really listened. I had not had a teacher with so much compassion for life and for the individual child before. HIs love of Canada passed on to me as well. I had to do an oral presentation of dogs once and I won the class level and went on the school level. He told my parents how proud he was of me and put his arm around me. No other teacher had done this in all my years at school in Toronto. We loved his stories about his family and his wife and father-in-law and of course his horses. I went on to teacher's college and when I began to teach in the early 70's I met Don a few times at social gatherings. He always accepted me as an equal.
His sincerety and wisdom will always stay with me as he was a terrific role model (teacher and man) that I have cherished knowing.

Condolence: Dear Weir Family
My mom sent me the news of Don's death on Sunday. It has been a long time since I've seen Don but I remember him well. We visited during my early teenage years the first time. I remember meeting everyone and a great number of animals including a large pig (was his name Kink?). At that time as a teenager I was never very keen to visit with my parents for the obvious reasons but the Weir household was different. There were many reasons I loved spending time in Newmarket and one of them was surely Don (and the pig). He truly made contact with me and with my bothers. He was interested and had that rare ability to connect with teens who are not the easiest to connect to. What did he do? I think he just asked the right questions. I found out he was in education. At that time he was a principal I think. It is no surprise to me. He was interested in kids and they were interested in him. Later I found myself in teachers college and we had did an exercise to look back on early educational influences. What drew you to teaching type of thing. It was never on the agenda overtly - I don't remember Don ever asking me what I wanted to be - but he was a role model for me. If I was going to be a teacher I wanted to follow some of the qualities that I sensed in Don. He truly cared. He listened. And he knew some good jokes.
All my love and best to those that Don leaves behind. He was a fine man.

Condolence: Dear Sarah, Brian, Ellen, Olivia, and Patrick,

Our thoughts and prayers are with you at this very difficult time. I lost my father at 13 so I know how devastating it is to lose someone you love. The pain will never completely go away, but will subside with time. Just be close as a family and let the tears fall; and cherish all of the great memories.

Love, Janet, Gary, Stephanie, and Mitchell
