Meeting Mary

I first met Mary just over 20 years ago. I went out to look at a sick steer. She had 3 children running around, a herd of cattle, I think a pony or two, several goats and pigs. Chickens, geese and ducks everywhere along with several cats, a golden retriever and a beagle named Coby. At that time she was new to the country life, but doing her best to adapt. She wore her worry for her children on her sleeve, and she was somewhat exhausted from running around after everything and everyone. Despite all of this, she was quick to give a beautiful smile and laugh. She was a joy. I recognized her as a kindred spirit, and we were instant friends. I realized very quickly that if there was a living soul with a beating heart- Mary was determined to feed it, nurse it and nurture it into health, and help it grow into adulthood, strong, and independent. This is reflected in all of her family- her children and grandchildren whom she has loved tirelessly throughout her life. People who were lucky enough to be touched by her smile were indeed lucky. I myself feel cheated that she has up and died like this, and wonder how this could have come to be. I know the pain her death has left behind. I will miss her. Suzanne Harrison
