My Mother's Story of Marjorie

My mother was still a young woman at home on the farm across the road from Marjorie's when Marjorie was a toddler of two or three. One day Marjarie's mother scolded her for something and Marjorie ran away to the woods crying. My mother followed her and found her sitting on a log. She sat down beside the tearful three-year old to comfort her when suddenly a chipmunk appeared very close to them. "Oh look," Marjorie exclaimed, "a munkchip." My mother thought this was very cute and funny and must have told me the story many times as I was growing up.

When Marjorie was in her late teens and early twenties my mother always brought her lipstick and nail polish from Detroit in the colors she wanted and couldn't find locally. They were both elegant ladies and shared their interest in retailing, Marjorie at Eaton's and my mother at the J. L Hudson Company in Detroit.
